Preliminary List of Grants from the Land Grant Database Project

The Center for Land Grant Studies, with funding from Rio Arriba County, the New Mexico State Archive, and the Chamiza Foundation, is developing a database of all New Mexico land grants. The initial version will list basic information on each grant including primary source references. Later versions, if additional funding is secured, will include a footnoted summary of the history of each grant, links to scans or transcriptions of original grant documents, translations if available, maps and other resources. When funding allows, the database will be posted on the Internet at www.southwestbooks.org and issued as a CD for both Windows & Macintosh. A printed manual and bibliography will be available to assist users of the database. Database design is by Robin Collier and Malcolm Ebright. Researchers include Robin Collier, Denise Damico, Malcolm Ebright, Rick Hendricks, Norman Martinez, Kay Matthews, Richard Salazar, and Mark Schiller. Additional resources for the project are being provided by the New Mexico State Archives. Some completed grant summaries, primarily those in Rio Arriba County, may be purchased individually on our Land & Water page.

Grants A-J | Grants L-R | Grants S-Z | Grants by County | Explanation of Types of Grants

This is a work in progress. Updated 3-21-2005

These are just the preliminary listing of grants and will be updated considerably during the project, as source documents for each grant are rechecked and more information added. Some grants listed are fraudulent or were not pursued for lack of documents.

Grant Names: Because grants are known by many names, you may need to search with your browser on all the pages to find the grant you are looking for. Grants are known by the name of one or more of the original grantees, place names that often changed over time, and/or by one or more of the heirs or purchasers claiming the grant. Other names we aware of are in parenthesis following the main grant name.

Source abbreviations: SANM= State Archives of New Mexico, SG = Surveyor General, PLC=Court of Private Land Claims, PLB=Pueblo Lands Board, ICC=Indian Claims Commission, F=File J=Journal, (##/###)= reel & frame of microfilm at the New Mexico State Archive Land Grant Records in Santa Fé, NM.

Bowden reference: Page # of Mr. Jocelyn Jean (J. J.) Bowden's unpublished 1969 six volume Master's Thesis "Private Land Claims in the Southwest" available to view on microfilm at the NM State Archive, or in bound form at the NM Supreme Court Law Library and Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX.
